This is Bridgehampton Day. This is Black culture alive and well in the Hamptons.
People think Hamptons and they think a certain thing. But WE know the real story. We were here. The Eastville community in Sagaponack since the 1800s. The SANS – Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, Ninevah – one of the oldest Black beach communities in America. And right here in Southampton Town. We built churches before there were mansions here.
My family KNOWS this land. The Stephens Family – East Hampton born and raised. My grandfather in Water Mill – hands in the dirt, back bent, making sure ALL of Long Island had potatoes on the table. When Long Island was feeding the country, WE were feeding Long Island. That’s not just work, that’s legacy. That’s why this food hits different.
This curry chicken? This oxtail? This cabbage cooked right? This is survival, this is Sunday dinner at grandma house, this is a recipe that crossed an ocean and made a home on Long Island. It’s the same spirit that had us farming potatoes in Water Mill and East Hampton when no one else would.
It’s love in a styrofoam box. It’s community on a folding table outside. It’s our elders laughing, our kids running around, our music in the air. It’s Southampton, it’s Bridgehampton, it’s Water Mill, it’s East Hampton – It’s OURS.
So when I say this plate is 1000/10, I don’t just mean the taste. I mean the culture. I mean the Stephens legacy. I mean we still HERE.
